Farnborough Rotary club will be organising collections this weekend.
We hope to be collecting in Fanborough Town Center and also at the Meadows in Camberley, outside M&S.
As I write, we have received the appropriate licenses from Rushmoor Borough Council and Bracknell Forest. We are waiting on an agreement fro Marks and Spencer
I will report back how much we raise.
All money raised will go towards buying Shelter Boxes,
These specially designed boxes are made for disaster areas and are packed full of vital lifesaving equipment, including a tent that can sleep up to 10 people, pots, pans, a water purification set, tools and other implements to enable survival in the type of conditions we are seeing in Haiti.
Here is a press release sent to the local press
PRESS RELEASE
Heavy snow falls and icy conditions before Christmas, stopped members of Farnborough Rotary club from making collections on many housing estates in Farnborough.
The street collections which are held every year, raise money for local charities.
The club’s vice president Sean Usher said he was disappointed, but says safety comes first “The club’s members, made a tremendous effort to get out and collect as often as possible, but towards Christmas it just got too risky. There was too much snow and ice on the footpaths”.
The club normally collects for around 20 nights leading up to Christmas, but this year they only managed 13. “There are 7 areas in Farnborough that we just didn’t get to and I know that many people on these estates would have been looking forward to seeing our Christmas float and seeing Father Christmas out in the street too, So I would like to apologise to them.
“I think that we were in for one of our best years, in terms of collections. The people of Farnborough are always so generous, but this year even more so. Our Christmas collections normally total £11-12k and we were on target to beat this quite easily.
“Its disappointing that we didn’t match previous year’s collections, but we still raised £9k for local charities and that is something we are all proud of”.
Farnborough Rotary club recently raised £4620.18 towards the Robyn Higgins appeal.
Robyn has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma.
Our club Rotarians jumped at the chance of helping and two of our club members Diane Bedford and John Batty, contacted the local Morrisons store in Southwood to ask if we could rattle our tins outside. They kindly agreed.
So for two weekends members of our club stood outside the store and I must say were very generous in these difficult economic times.
Over £200k has been raised but £300k is required to send Robyn to a hospital in New York for treatment that is not available here in the UK.
Robyn has endured 9 bouts of chemotherapy and is obviously a very brave young girl.
We wish her and her family well for the future.
As well as raising £4620.18 our club gave an additional £500.
